ISV successfully hatches rare Asian turtle!
The ISV is happy to announce that again a very rare Asian turtle species could be successfully bred for the first time! The Chairman himself, Gerhard Schaffer has hatched out the rare spiny hill turtle Heosemys spinosa some weeks ago. Until then, only a few zoos have achieved this, from private people no reports are known to the ISV. The main problem for breeding aren't egg depositions, it is the incubation and fertility rate of eggs. Natural observatons on these species are very scarce, so keepers often don't know how to provide the optimum climate while incubation.
We hope to at least support conservation efforts a little bit with our knowledge of keeping and breeding to secure the future of this beautiful turtle!
